VIDEO: Health and Community Tips for the Week of 4/5/2021

Today on Pops’ Barnes Health and Community Tip for the week, along with Co-hosts Ms. Andrea Winston, Chief Executive Officer of New Horizons Behavioral Health, and Ms. Susan Gallagher, Director of Development, Marketing, and Community Relations affectionately know as the “Lady With the Glasses”, we had three special guests: Mr. Hew and Mrs. Carolyn Lipscomb and Dr. Jonathan Liss.

The Lipscombs are the Senior Citizens who travel 17 counties each week delivering food to the senior citizens in those counties who need food. For many senior citizens in those counties that will be the only meal they will receive. In many areas in Georgia food insecurity is a big problem.

The Lipscombs COLLECT FOOD ITEMS, LOAD THESE ITEMS ONTO THEIR TRUCK, AND DELIVER THESE FOOD ITEMS TO SENIORS AT THE VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN THE 17 COUNTIES. THIS COUPLE DOES THIS BY THEMSELVES. Can you imagine what a job that is each week for them to accomplish that?

They are in need of people to donate money to buy food for seniors. They don’t ask for money for themselves for gas or anything, just money for food for seniors. Carolyn said a $2.00 donation will allow them to give a senior citizen $20.00 worth of groceries. I am asking for them that if you can send $2.00 to feed a Georgia senior citizen, please sed your donation to

This is a free service offered by Dr. Liss at the Columbus Memory Center, 7196 N. Lake Dr., right next to the Social Security Office. It is easy, you take the test and you see what your memory number is and then the good thing about it is that you can take the test each year and have the confidence that  you have a healthy brain. If the test show a problem, then early detection affords you treatment to slow the progress of the disease; it is a win/win situation.

Dr. Liss also gave us some exciting news about medications that are new and revolutionary in the treatment of alzheimers In his slides he says “Columbus Memory Center offers FDA approved trials designed to either prevent Alzheimer’s or slow its progression in the earliest stages of disease.” The good thing about this is that it is free. If you are interested in joining a trial please contact the center at (706) 327-4000.

Finally, Dr. Liss spoke about Columbus Laugh Day on April 30th.In his slides, Dr. Liss states “Research shows that routine laughter therapy results in reduced stress, depression and anxiety boosting overall health, wellness and quality of life.” Columbus Laughs Day will be April, 30 2021 starting at 11:00AM.
